CAIT Beta - Mobile User Guide

About CAIT Mobile

The CAIT mobile site is an extension of CAIT, WRI’s Data Explorer. It was developed to improve accessibility of the existing CAIT platform, and to enable exploration of CAIT data from virtually anywhere, at any time.

The mobile site contains the same data as the full-sized version of CAIT, but is designed especially for mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones. Employing user-friendly touchscreen-oriented navigation, the site allows for easy selection of data for particular regions, countries, or U.S. states, and display the results through data tables and visualizations which can be saved or shared as needed.

  • Getting started with CAIT Mobile
    • CAIT switches automatically to the mobile version when opened on handheld devices. Desktop or laptop users can also view the mobile interface by simply reducing the size of the browser window. The main mobile interface includes a navigation pane at the top and a data view area that portrays data based on user selections from the top left “Select Data” button. The data can be viewed either as a table or visualization by selecting the “table” Table Icon icon or “visualization” Chart Icon icon. The third icon on the right Menu Icon contains a list of supporting materials such as our FAQ, User Guide, and Feedback Form.
    • Upon startup, the default selection is the Country GHG Emissions data collection with two indicators (Total GHG Emissions Excluding LUCF, Total GHG Emissions Including LUCF) for all countries in 2010, sorted alphabetically by country name. Users can select different data collections and visualizations by using the navigation bar.
  • Selecting Data
    • Clicking on the “Select Data” on the top left will bring user to the data selection page. Four sections are found here: Select Collection, Select Indicators, Select Countries, and Select Years.
      • Select Collection: Users can choose any one of the four data collections currently available in CAIT: Country GHG Emissions, US State GHG Emissions, Country Clean Technology Data, and UNFCCC Annex I GHG Emissions. Information about each collection, including methodology can be viewed by selecting the “i” button to the right.
      • Select Indicators: Depending on the data collections selected, different sets and subsets of available indicators will show up, including the range of years available. For each indicator, up to five calculation methods can be selected: Total Value, Percent Change from Prior Year, Per GDP-PPP, Per Capita, and Cumulative. The number of selected subsets is shown on the top right.
      • Select Countries: Depending on the indicators selected, a list of regions, countries, or states will show up here, and individual selections can be made by tapping the check boxes to the left. The list can be easily browsed by tapping the corresponding letter on the right.
      • Select Years: Here users can type in specified year(s) for displaying data in the table. Options include entering years individually (e.g., “2007”), as ranges (e.g., “2003-2005”), or as lists (e.g., “2003, 2006”).
    • Users can complete their data selection by successively going through all four sections, or by clicking on the table button on the top at any time to view the current selection. The “Next” button within each section will lead the user to the next step, until the select year(s) page where selecting the “Next” button will direct the user to the data table presenting selected indicators. At any point, users can review their customized selections on this page.
  • Viewing Results as a Table
    • After selecting indicators of interest, the data can be viewed as a data table by selecting the Table Icon icon either on the top navigation bar, or at the bottom of the “Select Data” page after “View Results”.
      • Sorting Columns: The data table is sorted alphabetically by default. Tapping/clicking once on the column header will sort the data from highest to lowest value; tapping/clicking twice will sort from lowest to highest value. When only a single year is selected, the year is shown following the indicator name in each column.
      • Viewing Additional Information: Tapping/clicking on the “i” icon next to a region/country/state name will open up its profile page in a new window, showing an overview of all the data available within CAIT for that loaction. Within each overview, tapping/clicking a specific indicator will go directly to that indicator’s table view; tapping/clicking the grey “Sources” text will bring a pop-up window with the corresponding methodology information.
      • Expanding Regions: Tapping/clicking the Region Icon icon next to a region name will expand the list of countries within that region with data of the same indicator(s) and year(s) selected.
  • Viewing Results as Visualizations
    • To visualize the selected data at any time simply tap/click the Chart Icon icon. On this page, another pane of icons under the navigation pane shows the available visualizations for the selected data: map, bar, line, stacked bar, or pie charts. (Note: There are rules in place to control which chart types are available depending on the data being viewed.)
  • Other Features
      • Each data table and visualization within CAIT has a unique URL that can be bookmarked, copied, and shared directly from your mobile browser. This makes it possible to share data via social networks or e-mail, save particular data points of interest, and revisit the selected data from a desktop or laptop computer for further analysis.
      • Tapping on the CAIT “home” logo part at the very top will redirect to the mobile start page with default values. Tapping on the WRI logo in the top left corner will bring the user to the CAIT project page, where one can find additional information about CAIT including related publications, blog posts, data findings, and other items of interest
  • Updates, Feedback, and Others
      • Data and platform updates will be deployed periodically; sign up for e-mail notifications (and join the CAIT Google Group) to receive these and other updates.
      • User comments and suggestions on site functionality, desired features, available data collections, etc., are encouraged and can be submitted through the Feedback Form
      • Specific data questions or technical issues can be sent by e-mail to wcait@wri.org.
      • For detailed information regarding methodologies, please refer to the “Select Data”-“Select Collection” page, or read CAIT GHG Sources and Methods Documentation and CAIT U.S. State GHG Sources and Methods Documentation.
